What region is Kalispell, Montana in? ›

Kalispell, city, seat (1894) of Flathead county, northwestern Montana, U.S. The city lies in the Flathead Valley near the head of Flathead Lake. It is the western gateway to Glacier National Park and headquarters of the Flathead National Forest.

A large portion of the region is in public ownership, with millions of acres open to hunting and other outdoor recreation activities.

The larger mammals who make their home here include grizzly bears, lynx, black bears, moose, wolverines, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, coyotes and wolves. The region is also home to badgers, beavers, otters, porcupines, mink, bats and more.

Whitefish is a family-oriented community and resort town in northwest Montana with a population of approximately 6,357 people (based on the 2010 census, a 26.33% increase from the 2000 census). The area within Whitefish City limits, including Whitefish Lake, is currently 7,484 acres or 11.69 square miles.

Kalispell was named for the Kalispell Indians, adding an “L” when making it official. Kalispell is a Salish word meaning “flat land above the lake.” From about 1885 to 1930, large steamships traversed Flathead Lake to enable the transport of goods from just south of Kalispell to Polson.

WINTER WEATHER

In FWP's Region 1 (northwestern Mon- tana), which has by far the state's largest whitetail population (and lowest mule deer population), the whitetail herd peaked in 1996, producing a regional harvest of 18,028 whitetails.

Region 2 (Western Montana)

Over 62% of this region is public land. Region 2 also features large areas of private lands with ranching economies, corporate timber lands, Nature Conservancy lands and metropolitan areas. Most Region 2 Block Management areas are in mountains, mountain valleys and foothills.

And there you have a quick overview of elk. There are several herds in the Kalispell area, both on the west and eastern sides of the valley. Keep your eyes open and you may be lucky enough to see them!
